...boring, unfortunately. Sorry the blog has been so slow this week. We have not had a lot to report. Mike has been working steadily on the house, but on so many projects at once that we do not have any photos to present. He found a neighbor to drive him to the hardware store to pick up a big saw yesterday, which is always an exciting treat.
We found out a few weeks ago that the couple that shares the other half of our house is also pregnant. They are renovating their half of the house, too-- so we felt we already had some things in common. We liked them immediately, and are really happy that they will be in a similar situation. We invited them over several weeks ago to show them the house, only then realizing that our planned nursery would be just one wall away from their bedroom. Now that they are pregnant, their nursery will lie next to our bedroom! So, it all works out.
Otherwise we have been a little more social this week. We had some friends who were in town for one night over for a barbecue Monday. In the Netherlands, a barbecue just means you cook up a big pile of meat, so that is what we did. We had chicken, sausages, ribs, kebabs... and more. Mike made a few nice sides to go along with the meat.
On Wednesday a colleague, Nadine, invited us to her house to enjoy a meal prepared by another colleague, Shi Hongwei, and his wife. We all helped make dumplings, a tofu dish, and a chicken recipe featuring that product of the South, Coca cola! Isn't that cool? When things settle down a bit I will get the recipe. Does that qualify as a definition of globalization? A German woman hosts a party in the Netherlands with Americans and Chinese people as guests, where they enjoy traditional Chinese food, (one dish incorporating Coca cola) and finish the night off with Belgian chocolates.
Last night, Friday, we went to see our friends' Judith and Niels new apartment. They live quite close by in a building where another colleague, David, lives. Our neighborhood is really filling up with friends-- which is nice. Judith and Niels have just decorated and their place looks great. Really warm and homey. In several rooms they chose to paint just one wall, and it looks amazing-- it gives so much color without making the room look smaller than it is. We had a good time. Judith topped the night off by giving us a mobile for the baby's room. It is not designed specifically for babies-- she had it hanging in her old place-- but it will surely entertain a baby! It is a plastic pig with wings suspended on a string. When you hang the pig and turn on the switch it flies in a circle. Seriously. She said her parents dogs also think its great. We cannot wait to hook it up.
