Well we have not been blogging as you can see... though we had a relatively speedy recovery from the 24 hour bug. I (Kat) was about 1 day behind the guys in feeling poorly (fortunately had just a long day of nausea to contend with). Not a thrill when big and pregnant, but certainly not the worst thing in the world. Since that time we've been playing catch up with tasks around the house. Mike began working on the tiling the front entryway again. While I occupied his little helper, Mike cranked out that job over the course of a few days. I think it looks incredible. Here you can see Dad with his eager assistant James.
Mike and I have enjoyed talking about his summer, including concepts for houses (including this one). Though we want to finish this house in the immediate future, we still want to find a balance between just completing it and using the materials we already have to make it nice. Mike has been working to conceptualize the front hall-- and has a new idea from
Inside the Not so Big House by Sarah Susanka and Marc Vassallo a "pod" directly across from the front door that will go from floor to ceiling and provide a break to create the entryway as a separate room, but also eliminate the need to hang doors (a huge plus). He is planning that it will serve as a wall and a storage area with glass bricks in the center to allow the all-important light to continue to come through into the main room. This will feature a
tokonoma or Japanese-inspired display shelf (also an idea from the 'not so big house'). It should be interesting-- we will of course keep you informed with text and photos. For now here are some shots of James-- one with his train backpack, and one chilling with mom on the sofa

Good job on the tile. That will make a big difference in the main entrance - larger already. It's a good thing you have that helper, just think what he is learning just watching.
We love the "Not So Big House" too. It's a great book. She has a couple of others that are worth reading also (building the not so big house and one about built-ins).
Way to go on the tile! James looks like he is concentrating hard so that he can help next time.
